    Hot water bottle in UC

Even in the spring here in VA it can dip into the 30s(F) under tree cover. When ground camping I will sometimes use the hot water bottle trick if I am using a lightweight bag. I am just wondering if anyone has tried a hot platy bag or two inside of a UC or UQ?

Not in the UQ b/c it'll create an air gap. I use them pretty often in the TQ, though. Just lay it over my femoral artery and snooze.

If that air gap is warm and not exposed to a draft do you think it would be a positive or a negative? I guess I equate non-ventilated air gaps to loft.

It will eventually get cold, for two reasons. First, the water bottle will compress the insulation and lose its heat to the bottom, so the hot water would cool more quickly.

Second, loft works by creating micro-climes...little bity pockets of air that can't move. If you have a big pocket of air, it'll have some convection and you'll end up losing heat. Your body will have to heat that pocket and keep it warm, which takes more energy than keeping the underquilt warm.

Plus it's pretty hard to get a completely non-ventilated air pocket in there...when you move you'd push some air out the sides of the UQ.

But you could try it out and let us know how it works for ya.

Makes sense, I am still deciding on a UC/UQ for my HH. I have improvised a few things but nothing very successful.

Once I decide I will give it a shot, worst that happens is I am cold and have to pull it out.

    thanks,

Mike, do let us know how it works for you.
    Perhaps we'll see something unexpected.

We are all about trying and reporting here on HF...

Yep - easy enough to test. Probably want some heavier duty shockcord to hang it with when you try that. Let us know how it works!
