Sierra Sniveler VS Hudson River Question

I normally sleep on my side in a modified fetal position. I have the bottom leg straight and the top leg angled out in the normal fetal position.

The Sierra Sniveler is a little wider than the Hudson River, and I was wondering if perhaps that would be a better choice. Anyone sleep in the fetal position with a Sierra Sniveler? Does the extra width help?

One other quick question. On the JRB site, they have a chart and recommend regular size for under 5'10" and the long size for over 5'10". I happen to be exactly 5'10". Do you think I can get by with a regular?

I actually have both and love them dearly. The Sierra has the capabilities of being worn as a top under a lightweight rain jacket which replaces my down jacket.

YAY for versatility!

The Hudson river is also a nice quilt. I think if you had either one angled in the same direction you were sleeping, you'd be fine.

Thanks, Leif. The wearable option does make a lot of sense to cut extra weight. I saw the pics of the snivelers being worn, and I didn't think it would be for me. But under a jacket makes perfect sense. It would protect the quilt and wouldn't look so odd, and we all know it's important to look good when camping in the wilderness.

I'm a little over 5' 10" in height and wondered the same thing regarding my Hudson River. For me it works fine. It is plenty long to fully tuck around the shoulders. If burrowing completely under, just the top of my head would be exposed. But a warm hat or down hood combines to give full coverage.

About my experience with that sleeping posture in the Hudson River... As I draw the one leg up, the required width of quilt for that leg movement cause the quilt to become untucked from the upper back. It usually requires me to reach over my shoulder and tuck the quilt in behind my upper back. This is kind of hard to do because I reach around, my contact point with the hammock rotates due to the shifting of weight. So sometimes I have to try that move a couple times before I get the quilt to wrap well around the upper back. But, in my experience, the width of the Hudson River has been adequate for good coverage in that particular side sleeping posture. I give it a thumbs up.

Well, I use the Sierra Sniveller for my top quilt, and I use the Hudson River for my underquilt. In a couple tests, I've swapped the two and both work as a top and underquilt... the Sniveller has to be rigged up differently as a underquilt though because it doesn't have gross grain on the head side.

I love the Sierra Sniveler and it's extra width. I do sometimes sleep in the fetal (really semi-fetal) position with no coverage problems. I'm 5' 7", so can't address the length issue.

I appreciate the info, Canoeski. I'm going to ride up to Damascus, tomorrow, so I hope to see the quilts in person and give them a test drive, but it sounds like the Sierra is going to be my top quilt.
