    Question Rings and webbing.

    Hello All,
Well my hammock is getting nearer to completion but one problem is I used accessory cord from a climbing shop and it stretched too much. About a two foot + drop when I got in. I initially set this up copying the Hennessey method with home made tree huggers too. I realized with the stretch of the accessory cord, I will try the Warbonnet method of a piece of webbing secured by a 'biner and a set of tri-rings(?). What kind of tape do I use that is static and where do I get the tri-rings or even two round rings would work?
    Thanks
    Dave

I think AHE's reflective webbing for tree huggers is particularly cool

I found welded rings at the local big-box hardware store for $1 each. They are not really light weight but they have a good load rating. Im using the webbing that came with my Speer kit along with a Black Diamond carabiner.

I seem to recall reading that using welded rings is a bad thing, as the weld may fail.

Yes that is true! The welded rings are not made structurally sound enough to handle a load that will be applied by a hammock when in it! That is why the one's that Paul at AHE (and other places) are continuous ring's with "no" weld's! The one popular ring made is by SMC, but Pauls are just as nice and you can get them in many different color's, unlike the SMC! Cannibal had one fail on him and has a pic somewhere of it I do believe!?

There was a thread about cad plated rings oxidizing, and damaging a hammock. These things are a poor place to cut corners.

Hmmmm, don't remember a picture; I was always taught when you did something dumb you deny, deny, deny.

Yeah, I had one break on the AT. Genuine Draft and I were sleeping double in our Trek Light Double one night. About 20 minutes after we went to bed there was a horrible sound, followed by a short drop. Landed on my butt with Genuine Draft on top of me. Folks camping nearby heard the noise and came to see what happened. The ring literally exploded, which created a jagged edge. The jagged edge is what saved us from falling hard because it grabbed the webbing on the way down and slowed the descent. I had used those same rings for about a year prior to them breaking without problems and Genuine Draft and I had probably spent about 20 nights in the hammock together. Plus, she had been sleeping in it on her own for close to a month. So, it may have broke in the end but it certainly held-up for a while before giving in.
    Trust nobody!
