    "ray way" beaked tarp

So, I've ordered a WBBB, and have a couple of sil tarps that I made a few years ago. I've got a 10X10 (or 9X9, can't remember) square one I made from wallyworld Silnylon in red (which is a terrible tarp color).

I have one in black, also not a great tarp color, which is 8X10 but is beaked in the "ray way" ray jardine style. Will the ray jardine style beaks on the tarp prevent it from working well with the hammock? Should I amputate the beaks?

At the risk of stating the obvious, try that tarp and see for yourself. That is the whole purpose of backyard hanging: gear testing. Black is a good tarp colour. Really blends in well. And since you already have the thing, it won't cost you any new money to use.

    Cheers

I made one of the Ray Way tarps w/ beaks just before getting started w/ hammocks & that's the tarp I used for a couple years or so.
It worked fine for the most part. The beaks gave better coverage for the hammock ends but also added some complications at times.

The beaks required you to have the tarp high enough that they didn't get in the way of the hammock supports, but that was not usually a problem because the tarp was long & wide enough to give good protection even if it was hung higher than some people hang their tarp.
Besides, I like my tarp high when I can.

Another thing is that the beaks will require a little more distance between trees to accommodate the extra length. But other than that, it worked pretty good!
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Also, since you were up for cutting the beak off anyway, you could just run a cut up the center to the ridgeline and add velcro so it's closeable. Then, your hammock supports can run through the beak, and you can seal it around them with velcro.

    Just a thought.

    Personally, I'd use as is.

Wouldn't a beaked tarp act similarly to a hex tarp (a rectangle with triangles on the ends)?
If so depends on the dimensions.

Good idea about the velcro. I'm just itching to try it out and waiting for the hammock to arrive. I had a hennessey a few years back and the tarp over it was diamond shaped (corner to corner) so I guess I was assuming that was the best way to hang it and the beaks would prevent that. I'll give it a try as is before I start hacking.

or you could just open up a section of the seam in the middle of the beaks, like a buttonhole, but then you would have to thread the hammock suspension thru it each time, which might or might not be worth it to save the weight of the velcro you would otherwise add.
    just a random thought, KM

(did that make any sense at all?...not enough caffiene this a.m., I think.)
