    Hello from Northern Mexico

Hello, my name is Ricardo, and I am 39.
When I have curiosity about something I try to dig out all I can about it, and looking in the internet come the theme of hammocks. I have used hammocks many times but never thought much about them, so when I read about them in the Wikipedia got interested in the old Navy hammocks and the modern travel hammocks made of ripstop nylon, the hammock camping movement, etc.
I had seen Navy hammocks in cartoons and old movies and always had wondered how would be to sling in one of them. Making a Google search found a pattern to make a Royal Navy hammock of 1775, that was essentially the same model used by the US Navy until they stoped using them, and was about to get one made, but step with an original Royal Navy hammock-camp bed from the 50´s for sale in a ww2 surplus webstore, that was even cheaper, so I ordered it hoping it is still usable.

The older model is 72x36 inches and has 12 eyelets in each end, and the newer model I bought has 16 eyelets in each end and have two fabric tunnels on the other side to be converted to a cot.

I plan to use this hammock on a property I have near a river this summer and will try to make a DIY hammock too, but need to search for info about materials and what kind of fabric could support my 110 kg. , so I hope this forum will be of help to learn about the way of the hammock.

Thanks in advance for all the trouble this lowly newbie is about to give you.

    Welcome, Nailer!

Skippy, hedcase and I recently returned from Big Bend, where we were able to look far into northern Mexico, and saw several of the residents of Boquillas. Sure wish we could have crossed the border. Check out the videos on my YouTube channel.

Around here, we reserve the term "lowly" for those that refuse to try hammocking. No such thing as a lowly hanger.

Thanks a lot for your greetings.

I have read some topics and will give it a try to a nylon hammock.

Will order a Skeeter Beeter Pro from Grand Trunk, and will go to the States in two weeks to pick it up togheter with my Royal Navy Canvas.

At first my intention was to buy a G.I. style jungle hammock from Rothco, but asked them about the weight rate and it was just 220 lbs, 23 sort of what I need. Then looked for a budget model with a mosquito mesh and the lest expensive was the Skeeter Beeter, but being rated at only 250 lbs, was just in the border line, so I decided for the Skeeter Beeter Pro, rated at 400lbs. Besides, I may need the extra space to lay diagonal.

Anyway, how close are the tolerances for the weight a hammock can support, as stated by the manufacturers?

Will try to find cheap ripstop nylon to make a rainfly/No-sew backup hammock.

I have read many comments in the threads from more experienced people about the subjects I was looking for.

    Thanks a lot.

With the apparently exception of Cuben Fiber, the weight tolerances seem to be directed more at the suspension and comfort factor (lighter material + heavier load = stretchy material that is not as comfortable). If you are 'close' to the weight, it shouldn't impact much of anything.

So, if I order the regular SB there wouln´t be much of a risk?. How about comfort? That shoulder thing, etc.
