Thumbs up WNC - Overnight hike/hang at John Rock 6/12-6/13

Hangin' Burrito and I are always looking for the 'quick getaway': John Rock, located in Pisgah National Forest, just outside Brevard NC (25 miles SW of Asheville) is the target of this outing.

We will meet at Noon on Saturday June 12th and do the loop hike counter-clockwise which, after ~3 miles, will put us somewhere near the summit of John Rock. This will leave lots of time for side trips and or lolly-gagging/geocaching along the way.

The hike out on Sunday will be ~1.75 miles or whatever one wants to add on to that.

Looking Glass Rock is just across the street if one feels so inclined. I did this, out and back in 3 hours.

    Goecaches along the way!

This is meant to be a light hike, have fun, take in some great views, enjoy a nice campfire with new and old friends kinda deal.

    ALL ARE WELCOME

After the Gorge, this will be a nice gentle hike. Does John Rock have camping allowed on top?

RF is going to do a "recon" hike today up there, so we'll let ya'll know.

I believe you can, except along 276, it has signs that say,"Camping allowed in designated areas only". Of course that's along the road.

On the map it looks like just below the summit of John Rock, there's a relatively flat area that would be great to set up camp. Stay tuned for more updates!

At the end of last summer there was a "No Camping" sign (nailed to the tree ) in the area to allow for unfettered growth.

Wish I could make this one guys. I'm only able to get away a couple of times a year, so I'd better shoot for October.

I did get up to Rockjock today for some trail work. That gave me a little bit of a Gorge fix!

You guys have a good trip!

I just was asing someone about good places to hike in that area and they recommended a few loops near that fishery in the pisgah forest. One of the trails "had lots of swimming holes and pools and places to camp" I wonder if this is the same area?
