At 3"-6" I can sit back in my hammock sideways and cook under my tarp. The ground next to me becomes my night table, especially if I can find a rock to set up next to.

I can set up in trees (depending on the trees of course) up to about 25' apart, but prefer about 12' apart. I normally test hammocks on a 15' spread at my house.

I find that backpacking sometimes the perfect hang is there and sometimes you take what you can get .... and that makes it perfect.

I'm not sure what "high" or "low" is. I guess it is relative to each person. I like to hang at a height where when I sit down in the hammock, my feet touch the ground at "chair" height, so I can get in and out of the hammock easily. I usually have a foot or two of space on each side of my tarp. When in the hammock, I am probably about two + feet off of the ground.

I chose close and low... I started doing that when I discovered it improved the lay in my HH after installing the 2QZQ#2 Bugnet Zipper Mod. Now that I sold the HH and bought a Speer, I do it because it enables breakfast from the hammock.

Yep. Laying back, cooking, eating, smoking a cigar all from your portable lounge chair. I use to hang high when I used "closed" hammocks. But since I started making them myself or using a nano, low is the way to go.

My pet peeve is finding a good spot without a lot of underbrush or tree limbs that effect the tarp placement. In established camp sites this is usually not a problem, but when you reach the end of the day somewhere between campsites, this could be an issue.

Last fall after the leaves fell thick at MAHHA I raked my site... complete with a little path for very short night time walks.

At Mt Rogers, we had to shovel our sites! Everyone had a little path to a patio at the tarp entrance, with 20" walls of snow.

    Close and high.

Just far enough apart for my tarp to fit...about 5 paces.

High, because I don't stand up from the bullfrog position very easily, these days.
