    HH Ridgline

I was laying in my ULBA this weekend and looking at my ridgeline. It looks an awful lot like the mason's line I have.

Anybody know what it is made from?

    Break strength?

Can I get away with using mason's line as a ridgeline for my other hammocks?

    Thanks

Mason's line works great for ridgelines. That's what many people use.

Check out this neat little diagram from Sgt Rock's website http://hikinghq.net/images/hammock/H...on_Diagram.jpg

Mason line should be fine as long as you don't make you suspention line angle less than 25* from horizontal and your ridgeline keeps your hammock at the "ideal" 30*. The closer you get to 0* the higher the tension is in the ridgeline. If you crunch the numbers for 200# weight and 1* from horizontal in the suspension you get over 11,000# tension, but if you have a 25* angle in the suspension it's only 82.5# tension.

I could be wrong, though. The ridgeline definitely makes the free-body diagrams and number crunching interesting.

I don't know what it is made of, but it is the same material as used on the lines for the HH tarps. I've heard it is around a 300lbs break strength.

I'm not sure where you're finding your mason line, but the ones I've found have a BS of anywhere from 0# to 15#, but nothing anywhere near 300#.

I would never use Mason Line for a RL. Mason Line is fairly weak IMO as it can be broken by anchoring it and giving it a good pull.
