    One Final Decision

    I've decided on the following:

    1) MacCat Deluxe (is already ordered)
    2) FF Winter Wren bag
    3) HH EULA (not yet ordered)
    4) ????

Here's where I just can't make up my mind. It's been discussed here before the Pros/Cons of the HH SS vs a down undercover like the JRB Nest, but based on my other choices, I'd like some feedback on this. I plan to push the season quite a bit, but in the dead of winter have a ground setup that is ecellent in the heavy snow.

Personally, I'm saving my money for a down UQ. If I decide to really push it I can always add a blue pad and a few degrees. The overcover can be DIYed pretty easily so I just can't justify the $$ on the SuperShelter. Of course, I got over my HH love months ago so it really isn't an issue.

I've heard a lot of mixed opinions on the HH SS. You hear nothing but good things about the JRB line of quilts. I own a couple of JRB quilts and couldn't be happier with them. Ed Speer also just released the SnugFit under quilt. The SnugFit is and incredibly well designed and functioning under quilt, although a bit pricey.

    I agree w/ headchange4u.

My JRB quilts (&other products from them) are made well and function as promised. I still use my HH, but the SS just doesn't seem as good in my mind. Speer's UQ looks great, too.

I opted for a JRB Nest and an HH overcover in conjunction with my existing mummy bag (MEC WinterHawk). The final bits arrived today so I'm off to the back yard to try it out. It's drizzly with an overnight low of 52 expected.

One of my camping colleagues uses the HH undercover/underpad combo and is happy with it, although he admits it took a little getting used to. The Hennessy site explains that the underpad/undercover combo tries to hit a lower price point than down underquilts with comparable weight/packing.

    Quoddy,
When I was first considering what to do with the staying warm issues, I wasn't sure if I wanted the SS or the underquilts either. I ended up going with the JRB quilts though. I find they are very versatile... you can easily adjust them for warmer temps by opening up the 'doors' and they are pretty easy to adjust to get them a tad warmer by getting the down more under you if you need to. It's easy to just throw in your torso pad too if you need even more insulation.

    My 2 cents,
    Perkolady

Wow! Is this a reversal, or what?

In a complete reversal of much of my previous thinking, I just ordered:
A Speer IIIA hammock and a Peapod III w/overfill) to go with the MacCat Deluxe and FF Winter Wren (w/overfill)

sounds like a good choice. i have one of the older model pea pods (sewn through construction) & i love it.
i'd like to get one of the newer, baffled pea pods some day.
i was w/ ed speer when the red hammock seen on the cover of his book failed him (after 5000 hrs use i think).
we were on mt mitchel, nc. temps in the mid to low twenties.
he just used a little plastic as a ground cloth, a ccf pad, & the peapod & top quilt he had & slept nice & warm.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

    That's a lot of loft!
