I know how to sew already. This should make it easier to make my own hammock. My question is what type of sewing thread should I use with ripstop nylon? I assume nylon. Where can you pick that up at?

We bought the giant spool of thread that Ed Speer sells. It's a bargain compared to the stuff at the fabric stores, and will last a lifetime of gear making.

Unfortunately, he's out of stock right now, and is phasing out much of the stuff in his store, due to the transition to most of the gear being sold by Tree to Tree Trail Gear, so I'm not sure where you'd get it.

It's a polyester core wrapped with polyester fiber, if that helps you decide which thread to pick up.

Polyester thread. You can pick it up at various places, but if you need to order it online, why not support one of the HF members: Arrowhead Equipment - Gutermann Polyester Thread

I would advise against nylon thread. Generally the recommendation is 100% polyester. Guttermanns is a good brand often used but there are others such as what is available from Ed Speers. Just don't buy cheap thread or you will regret it down the road.

Nylon thread has a significant stretch to it. While you are correct that you should match the thread to the material you are using, in the case of nylon, unless you have a commercial machine designed for using nylon thread you are better off going with polyester.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

"Bless you child, when you set out to thread a needle don't hold the thread still and fetch the needle up to it; hold the needle still and poke the thread at it; that's the way a woman most always does, but a man always does t'other way."

And with the Memorial Day Sale this week it makes the thread a better deal than even what most sewing supply shops can do on price.
