Maxim Tech Cord

Has anyone used Maxim Tech Cord for suspension? From the New England Rope Company. Here are the specs http://www.neropes.com/product.aspx?...1&lid=3&pid=66. I hope to get my hands on some Amsteel today to try out HC4U's trucker hitch system, but if I cannot find any, I think this would do in a pinch. It's pricey, at 4.00/m, but has a rated strength of 5000lbs.

I haven't used that specific cord, but have used other tech cords from climbing rope companies. They are generally stiff and heavy, and something like Amsteel is a lot better choice for hammock suspensions, IMHO.

Thanks Mustardman. Unfortuately, I cannot seem to find any Amsteel in Vancouver today! The two largest marine rope distributors are closed today, and one of the largest yacht supply houses is out of stock. Grrrrr.

if you need it fast and that's all you can get, they will certainly work. Some tech cords are worse than others, as far as taking knots and so forth. If you've got a place you can handle the cord before buying in person, that will help a lot, as far as determining how easy the cord is to work with. It might end up being overkill, but it won't drop you on your butt

If not Amsteel, how about NER endura 12, Marlow D12, English Braids dynamic line.

They are all similar dyneema sk75 based braids. This may make your search easier

I picked up some tech cord any way. This will not replace the spectra that HH uses. Instead, I formed two loops out of the Maxim with a double fisherman loop. Then each lop gets a descender ring attached with a lark's hitch. These will be used IF I have a hang that is too wide for the stock lines and straps. I have used a clove hitch to attach a descender to each spectra line on the hammock, and these will feed through a biner, back to the ring and tied off to tension the line. Drop in the tech cord loops between biner and spectra if I need extra length. Will test it out next weekend.

Two things:

The cord spec'd at 5,000 is 3/16" diameter. Most people prefer to get the smallest diameter cord possible for both weight and bulk savings. The 1/8" diameter cord listed is spec'd at 3,000 lbs which is more than adequate and comparable to Samson's 1/8" AS-78.

Also with the latest craze for splicing, single braid cords are more popular. The double braid cords can be spliced, but it is a lot more difficult and a lot more work.
