Old mountain hikers learn new tricks

Stopped backpacking when the kids were little. Want to get back out there, but wish it was lighter. Picked up a byer's traveler's hammock today and going to see what the hubbie's back thinks of it. I assume you're either a hammock lover or not.
If he likes it, is it a goal to try to assemble a mosquito net/ tarp setup that will fit around 2 hammocks?
I've done a lot of DIY gear projects (kayaking or backpacking) and may be sewing some hammock stuff soon.
We're just southeast of the Catskills, love to take photos, and are going to need a little tent for the 50 pound vizsla to keep him warm and safe from bugs.
So glad there's so much info online! Thanks to everyone who has put so much time and care into it!

    Good of you, Ma'am!

The Byer Travel Hammock may be a little short. The fabric portion is only 7 feet long, although the string ends make it effectively 10' to 11' long.

I cut the strings off mine and ran a Whoopie sling through the channels, to make a little camp chair/gear hammock.

Check out how simple it is, though... you could probably make a better hammock yourself!

Welcome HVC to the forum. You could make your own hammocks , tarp etc. Check the DIY part of the forum. Also check out Jeff's site "To the woods" and Shugs 10 pt video's for new folks.

My wife likes her DIY 2-layer hammock. Just took a little while to put it together, and it cost very little to make. We're considering making a sock out of netting for bug protection to make it a true camping hammock. It's light, small and easily packed anywhere. The DIY route is a definite possibility if you're just wanting to try things out.

RE: the Vizsla - GREAT dog! We owned one when I was younger, and she was the best hunting dog that was ever a part of the family. Super smart, easily trained and a pleasure to have as a companion.

Yup, Bruce at 6' tall found it a little cramped but since I'm only 5'2, it seems ok to me. The strings do make it act longer, but you don't want your feet tangled in there.
If we do this, he may eventually get a Hennessy and we'll retire the travel hammock.

    I so appreciate the comments!
I will be looking into the DIY stuff more, first to get some bug protection.

Be aware that once you've watched Shug's noob videos you may find that you need to carve out a healthy slice of time in order to watch all the rest of them. They are somewhat addictive.

    Welcome

I'm not too far from you two. There is a New England hang on the 9-11 of July that I think you would enjoy, http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=15940
    Check it out.

As far as advice goes I'm still a noob myself and not that talented in the DIY dept. But this is the right place for information.
