Great thread! I think I have had just about all of them happen to me!
For those few saying "what is Murphy's law?"
"Anything that can go wrong will go wrong at the worst possible moment!"
I have long been of the opinion that Murphy was an optimist, or at least not a hiker.
I don't understand part of Brian's post: What are the hiking references in: #5, $7, #8 & #17. Tents are where circuses are held aren't they?
One I'll add: The more critical it is that you have a fire, the less likely you will be able to build one.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.
A fine list.
Murphy's Law of Canoeing:
Two canoes passing each other on a lake will EACH have a headwind!
All trees that will hold a hammock are covered with poison ivy/oak. It will remain invisible until you are taking the straps down.

In very rough terrain, and too far in to turn around, you will discover that the trail is uphill both ways, this is of course a delusion brought on by exhaustion, but at that point who cares.
Also, if you stare up at the trees looking for widow makers, that is the surest way to find ants hills and snakes.
I like to go solo - off trail - immerse myself in the area - explore - eat really well - and make it back home.
