    End Channels

I just got a strange idea for a double layer/single layer convertible hammock.
Has any one sewn channels into the ends of a hammock then tried making cuts in the channels? I'm thinking that if you whip the hammock through the end channels with the cuts in the channels, the option of weaving your whipping line or suspension through the channel of one layer and then the other and so on would effectively join the two layers together at the whipping.

The reason why the concept sounds interesting to me is that you could have a single double-layer hammock when whipped together or two single layer hammocks if whipped separately. Perhaps a lighter weight fabric combined with a heavier one such as a 1.1/1.7 combo?

I'm not sure what one would need to do to prevent fraying in the cuts in the fabric or if whipping would reduce the fraying.

This project isn't in the hopper yet. I thought I'd get some input to see about any different ideas or forgetting it altogether.

The fraying issue would be easy to solve. Use some clear nail polish or a product called "Fraychek" or some other brand. There are several options for that kind of sealer.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

    How have you been Rev?
Thanks for the fraying solution. Do you think the concept of a staggered weave on the end channels sounds feasible?

I'm not a designer so I really have no way of predicting how practical it would be. Can't be of much help there.

Using a soldering iron to make your cuts also does the trick on the fraying.

That would work well if you cut the slits before sewing the channel. Once the channel is formed I would be concerned about fusing the channel closed. Kind of defeats the purpose.

Thanks. I've got some mystery Wallyworld ripstop that might make for a decent test. I don't know that a single layer is strong enough to support my carcass, but two will.
