Sleeping in the clouds

So this past weekend I headed up to Grayson Highlands/Mt Rogers in Va and was hit by what I can only imagine is the worst possible weather for my new hammock; heavy fog.

My question is this, how do you keep the fog from condensing in the bug netting? Is it as simple as pitching the fly as steeply and close to the hammock as possible or is there some other trick?

when the fog rolls in that thick, it seems to not make much difference how the tarp is hung.
unless there's some breeze... in that case i'd think it may be a little better to block the direct air movement since it's going to be carrying all that moister (jmo).

but one of the most helpful things i've herd of is some sort of water resistant, yet breathable shield that covers your hammock.

this could be a weather shield (see jacks are better), a hammock sock or a travel pod.

Last December 29th on Springer Mountain, I ran into what you refer to.

I have to say it was truly miserable. It wasn't raining hard, but the "cloud" steadily condensed on me and my stuff, under the tarp.

I suppose that minimizing the volume that you occupy would reduce the condensation.

Me and at least two others left the next day, when the conditions showed no signs of improving. Everything was damp to the edge of wetness and we didn't want to start a night in that condition.

I'd be interested in a first hand report on how the hammock sock worked.

i don't have 1st hand experience w/ a sock or travel pod... yet, just going on reports from several others.
i still don't think it would be a 100% cure for the conditions you guys had on springer. i've camped in those conditions too.
but i believe (in my thinking) it's about the best type solution i've herd described.

I just finished a pod-sock, so just point me towards some fog and I'll be glad to try it out and report back to you.

Yup.... this is just why the old Weather Shield was designed... we are working on a resurrection...

So is it some weird disease you guys have and infect people with as they come around or what? All of a sudden Ive been stricken with the desire to sew.

After the replies I think I'm about to borrow my mother in laws sewing machine and make myself a weathershield and underquilt.

Most of the socks & weathershileds Ive seen don't seem to be a good "fit" for the HH bottom entry config and I think I have an idea for how to work with it.

Don't think of it as a "sewing machine." Think of it as a new power tool.

And it only gets worse. Just wait until you're at the fabric shop chatting with the little old ladies about things you didn't even knew existed a week before. Then you realize you've been at the fabric shop for 45 minutes.

Careful with the mother-in-law. My grandma is still laughing at me from when I called her asking how to finish a stitch. We all start somewhere!
