Wild Edibles Based Hang in Upstate NY

I'm in the initial planning stages of a trip near my home in the Adirondack Park in Upstate NY...

I've made a googlemap of the short hiking loop which covers about 5-7 miles in all...

My plan is to hit the trail on a Friday afternoon in July/August, hike a short ways in to a campsite by one of the ponds, setup camp, seek food, spend the next day looking for wild foods along the way to another campsite near the far end of the trail, and pull out mid-morning on Sunday...

I have a guide to wild edible plants, and with my NY sportsman license can get fish (including baitfish and frogs and mussels, which are abundant in the ponds along the route) and red squirrels if able...

I'm happy to do this solo, but would also love to have some company...I'll be trying out some new gear, and hopefully going quite light and simple...

Sure, just as long as you try everything first

Seriously, you know I'm always up for a trip to the ADK.

This may sound like a fun weekend I would be interested in. I'm no expert in wild edibles but I have a couple of books on them and I do have an interest in learning more.

Well, this sounds like an interesting trip. What the hell count me in. I'm going on the New England hang on 9, 10, 11 July. but any other time I'm good.

====> Just ONE guide???? Many wild edible plants and flowers are incredibly toxic, and mimic the edible ones. Take a look at Tom Brown's Guide To The Wilderness for some good discussions on this topic, or pick-up a copy of the SAS Survival Handbook. Without specific training, or a trained outdoor expert, pictures really can't be relied upon. For some plants, only the roots are edible, some the stalks, and some the flower tops only. I would be very, very, very careful. Baitfish? Why not REAL fish? LOL!
Coupla squirrels would be nice ... tasty over a campfire - just need to check 'em for parasites. Don't eat a squirrel with ticks on it.

Sounds like a nice hang, though! I will also be at the Vermont hang, and may be able to join you later, if possible.

I have eaten a lot of weird stuff in my time. Was fun in hindsight!
