I was a bit worried about zippers myself until I did a couple. I found then that what I should be worried about is not the zipper per se, but the tolerances required for cutting the things to be zipped. As it happened I was using a zipper to attach a bugnet to a hammock body, and there is lots of "give" in the amount of bugnet suspended above the body, so the zipper was a snap, in so far as the whole zippered thing was likely to work even if the fabric cuts were some off. Elsewhere in that project I used velcro when I had doubts about the correctness of the cuts, and it seemed like higher tolerances were needed. Saved the project, that did. Discovered I was off by a couple of inches...not a problem...just bunch up the velcro (one sided Free Magic) on itself, and slack disappears!

BTW NCPatrick, nice looking cover bag. Making one of these is in my future as well. I've got the fabric. Now I need the time....

    Thanks for the kind comments.

Lvleph, zippers really aren't scary, especially if you are already going to have a seam there anyway. I have a "zipper foot" for my machine which makes it very easy. You should look into getting one if you don't already have one. It fits itself in between the zipper teeth and the needle, and so keeps the distance constant.

    Nice job!

I think they are worth the extra weight, mine (Made by Hammock Eng.) easily adds 10 - 15 degrees to my cold weather set up, & only adds 13 - 15 Oz to my pack weight (depends on which scale I used).

My sock is "Permanenly" attached to my hammock, so is on every trip. A feature I realy apreciated on a August RRG trip, I was carrying my warm weather set up, fleece blanket & Kickass underquilt, the temp got cooler than I had planned on cause we were in a deep valley with 2 streams, I think the sun shown in the valley from 11A to 3P. Anyway, I got chilled, pulled up the sock, & in minutes I was out from under my fleece blanket. I could have rigged the underquilt for cooler temp, but that would have ment actually getting up, with the sock, I just unzipped the netting, reached to my feet, & pulled up the sock.

    Doctari.
