Good story. I haven't done exactly the stuff you did, but I felt your pain. Your trip also proves that a 5 year old can sleep through anything after a day of fun.
"my child's filthy foot exploring my nostrils" brought back memories. Our youngest was finally banned from sleeping with us at about age 5 as he slept like a tornado, so I too have had my child's filthy foot exploring my nostrils.

One I'll mention: As you mention, the sag of the hammock is critical to comfort. Once you find the "Perfect Sag" for your hammock, add a ridgeline to the hammock to "set" this sag.

Knotty, you said it. I went out there to spend time with and teach my son and to fellowship with my friends, old and new. I used a hammock to facilitate that. I get into the gear and have a good time thinking of ways to use it and improve it, but I don't go to the woods to use my gear. I get the gear so I can spend time in the woods.

On this weekend, my experience with the hammock was a glorious and thoroughly enjoyable failure. And when we got home, my son couldn't wait to tell his mom about the fish and the hot dogs and marshmallows and the waterfall. I'll fail like that every single day.
