    .

    FYI

The basin at the Linville Falls (first part of the first video Mac posted) is off limits to swimming.

I've seen some swimming there in the last few years, but they are taking a chance when doing so.

Just thought I'd give you a heads up...

Actually, there are a LOT of trails in LG that are "not" on the map, & w/ all the twists & turns, there are a number of places that confuse, even experienced hikers, & they often end up in places they didn't intend to.
There's no way to get all learn all you need to know about LG here on Hammock Forums. Have you visited Ken's website, linvillegorge.net ?
I would suggest you spend some time there, reading & asking questions. I believe that will help you to get the best out of LG

I rarely do my t-shirts but do my long sleeve shirt if I take it ... pants definitely, especially around the lower legs. I give my boots a good spray the night before I leave. Should you do your back pack ... wouldn't hurt but I've never done it myself. I spray my straps in my suspension so ants don't decide my hammock would make a nice side trip on their way somewhere else.

There are ticks ... NC is their summer vacation and buffet area the best I can tell. There are skeeters in the gorge ... but mainly the gnats run them off most times ... and we do have black flies and they're straight from the bowels of hades.

Son you need to learn to slow down ... don't be in such a panic ... or by the time you get my age ... well you might not get to my age! Enjoy life ... it's too dang short not to!

Bugs will just pester you ... use permethrin as you think you need it or not ... everyone has a level of tolerance for gnats and bugs ... pick your level and adjust to it. Don't let little details mess with your trip.

    I'm just saying ...

Last weekend, I had no bugnet. I put a 3' square silk wild rag over my face while I slept. No bugs bothered me after that.

Maybe so, but i've never had luck at smaller forums like i have had at bigger ones, bpl is the only exception to the rule. Seeking advice aobut hiking in the east there is difficult as most people are from the west there.

One thing I think I should tell you ... with the amount of dead hemlocks and combine that with fire damaged trees ... one thing you do need to take care of when hanging or camping on the ground in the gorge is make sure you're safe from widow makers. Thar be a ton of them these days. Check not only above you but anything that is in reach of you if it came down from wind and rain soak. Common sense stuff but probably more critical these days in the gorge.
