    Ultralight

Ultralight failure - fell on butt…

I bought a Grand Trunk Ultralight Travel Hammock at a local retailer.

I set it up and it seemed fine when tested indoors.

I used it for a one nighter on a fairly sloped hillside that I could have never put a tent on.

Then the next week I took it with me on a day hike. I set it up to sit on and as soon as I shifted my weight onto it from my legs it ripped through.

It tore almost perfectly in half.

    Very exciting and embarrassing.

I am very glad that I was set u in a save area when I fell, but still no fun!

I am thinking about going ENO so I can return it to REI forever if something like this happens again. I am wondering if this is a simple case of “you get what you pay for”

It is hard to convert people into hangers if they see me bust my butt.

As much as you must have been quite upset when that happened, I'm sure there was part of you that wanted to laugh when it split in half like a banana.

I would be curious is seeing a photo of how it split if you have one.

Hmmm I have a GT U/L I keep in my day pack also. Can't beat the size n weight but now you got me wondering... I'll keep using for this purpose only and see what happens. I'll sling low for safety. I've got others I use for sleeping in. Thanks for the update. Just a thought, did you have any sharp objects on your person which may have nicked or cut the fabric? I'm extra careful about that sort of thing when using a hammock.

I don't know how to ask this delicately...

Perhaps are you near or above the weight capacity of the hammock?

I weigh 230 so yes I am near the weight limit. i did not have anything sharp or anything like that on my person. Just wearing light weight "wicking backpacking clothes" and no shoes. And like i said it worked fine the one night before... This is my 1st hammock and I am just glad that i was not set up somewhere that i might have been in jured. I believe that the one night was worth the $20 spent... I just think that being that I am over 200lbs that i might need to make sure that my hammock is 2 layers??

i feel you should address the issue to John (our chiefhammockofficer) and see what he thinks.
id bet you'll end up w/ not only some good advice, but a new hammock as well.

maybe, the parachute nylon (not ripstop, btw) is to blame. you could always purchase a ripstop hammock like the Warbonnet traveler to get better results.

I had the same thought. I also have to ask how much you weigh?

I 'nicked' my most favorite of hammocks with the metal clasp on a ball-cap. Didn't take much to cause a small tear in the fabric. Untended, I can easily see that splitting the hammock after a use or two. Luckily I saw it immediately and was able to get it repaired. Three plus years later, I still sleep in that hammock at least one night a month.

I am also looking at the DIY section and I am thinking about just making a ridiculously strong one for myself. So perhaps my wife can snuggle with me before retiring to her own hammock for the night. I am thinking about doubling over some thick ripstop nylon leaving some room or a slot for a pad insert. It just sounds like a good idea.

And as far as the warrantee I feel that being 230 and having a sleeping bag and what not in there with me that one night more than compensates me for the fact that the limit is 250 and it only cost me $20… it still seems like a great product and I would not hesitate to suggest them to others. I’m just a little big.

Nah, you and I are just about the same weight and I've slept in plenty of UL hammocks. They stretch too much and aren't comfortable, but I haven't had one fail on me yet. Probably just a defect of some kind.

The whole 1st experience was not very good either… Not the hammocks fault. But I used nylon webbing which stretched a lot. And if you are saying the hammock stretches a lot to then that also added to my discomfort and the fact that between the 2 I had to constantly readjust my suspension throughout the night. I also was in a sleeping bag on top of a Big Agnes Insulated Air Core pad that kept slipping up through the night and acted like a radiator so I froze. Waking from the cold let me know over and over again that I was nearing the ground as everything stretched though…

I now have a Big Agnes sleeping bag too so the pad will be in the sleeve in the bag so I wont have to chase after it.
