I know this is an old thread but thanks for the tutorial. It would be great to have a sticky of just the knot tutorials. Lots to learn here. Thanks Opie and others for their contributions. -J

It would more than likely work fine. I would replace the simple knot shown in the first post with a barrel knot or blood knot. (same knot, different names. I have another pictorial on here somewhere showing how to tie it.) Taper the bury for the locked brummel as well. You may find that if you switch the type of stopper knot to one mentioned you will need to increase the length of the backsplice.

Weak point is going to be the knot. The eye should be just as strong as the rating of whatever line you are using. The brummel itself carries a far bit of the load which is why the bury doesnt need to be as long as a normal eye.

I think I hit the rest of your point in the first part. Ill pay better attention if you have any other questions.

EDIT: Heres the other type of stopper.

Thanks very much for the response! Sorry I took so long to comment back this time. Good to hear it can be used for more than just ridgelines.

Just completed my first soft shackle. Perhaps I should have worked with something bigger than zingit. Will post pictures soon. Thanks for the education. -J

I found for these soft shackles that aren't meant for heavy loads, I prefer a figure-eight knot instead of the overhand knot as the stopper. It holds up well, can be untied if necessary and looks prettier in my opinion.

This is a soft shackle prusik pictoral, not a soft shackle pictoral. Soft shackle prusiks are usually used for attaching tarp to ridgeline - not a weight-bearing application.

Opie does have a soft shackle pictoral.

While the diamond or figure 8 knot is recommended for soft shackles, I believe Opie did some testing and found that his method of soft shackles held up fine under load.
