    Am I in trouble?

I'm looking for some Colorado and IX experience with this question. I am going to the Creede area next week and I see low temps in the mid 30s. This will be my first hang below 57*. I have Leigh's UQ (not the summer one) and I made a single layer IX UQ. TQ and clothing not a problem as I sleep pretty warm and have a couple of options for the top. I am car camping. My question then is; generally is it mid 30s right at sundown or for about an hour in the early early morning yada yada yada. I have been out there many times but the low temp has never been this low. I guess I am really looking for some encouragement on my decision to make a single layer IX UQ Oh, the full length IX will be added to the down UQ.

Not terribly familiar with that area, but as a rule in Colorado...

Plenty of heat left in the ground and rocks to keep ambient temps in the 40s after sundown. A breeze will change that, but temps don't usually bottom-out until the little numbers on the clock. Take something to keep the wind off you when it blows and dress in layers and you should be good.

Folks are different, I know, but you mentioned you are a warm sleeper and I consider myself one too. I've just recently switched over to my 3-season quilts up in the mountains. Probably pushing my luck this early in the year, but safe is boring.

    Enjoy the trip!

    Funny little bit:

On Monday I shuttled a hiker from the train station downtown, to the CT Trailhead. He too was from Ohio. He did an AT Thru in 2000, so I assumed he knew what he was doing. Just as I was getting ready to wish him luck and shut the truck door I thought I better ask him what he had for cold weather. He smiled and said "Why do you think I've got this monster pack?" He had brought his winter gear with him and was having a hard time coming to grips with the fact that he was standing there sweating in shorts and a tee while telling me he had his winter gear. Poor little groundling.

Name is "Wahoo" if any 2000 thrus know him; nice guy.

No Colorado experience but, your post mentioned you have a Leigh's UQ. I have the same quilt (V2) and it kept me toasty into the teens last winter here in South Carolina. Mid 30's you should be fine with a decentTQ. I use a 15* down sleeping bag as a quilt in mine.

You oughta be just fine with Leigh's UQ ... I have seen one and they are nice.
Since you are car camping just bring it all and experiment and be sure to file a full briefing .... I love those reports.

    thermometer

I carry a max min thermometer and the min ALMOST always is dawn.

Do not hang in low places because of cold air drainage.

In our dry climate the temperature decreases by 5 degrees per 1,000 of altitude gain.

Have a great time in Creede.

Hey, I appreciate the Colorado beta and reassurances on Leigh's masterpiece. If I attach it correctly I will be in good shape. I suspected night time temperatures to reach ultimate low just before dawn, but arid environments are a lot different than here in the midwest where fluctuating humidity during the night raises and lowers perceived temperature. Anywho, taking all sorts of material to experiment with and two cameras so should have some documentation in the end.

    Thanks again!

We Ohioans are a different breed...

On a funny side note, got a funny look telling the girlfriend to be ready for weather in the 30's over the 4th. Her being the New Orleans native and you already can't go outside without sweating like crazy.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?
