While whoopies are cool and all I sell a ton of webbing based suspensions with the same cinch buckle or even rings. I have even had some folks that initially got slings come back and "upgrade" to cinch buckles. They are easy to use and for some one starting out they have a forgiving learning curve. Fewer components to mess with, and about as fast to set up as any option available. Use them for a while to start to get a feel of what you like and what you don't--then think about changing to another system if you think something else will do better for you. this coming from the guy that make a living replacing suspensions Big thing to start off hanging is to have fun, take your time learning the ins and outs of setting up and getting comfortable before you worry about little adjustments to make it your own--you got to find out what your own will be by using it. Have a fun trip and like the others have said practice as many times as you can first so you get the hang of it.

Donating member and diehard webbing and rings fan here. How ya doin?

I've got one of just about every suspension option I'm aware of and I still choose a webbing based rig more often than not. They are just too simple, easy, convenient, and durable for me to not love. Everything is connected, so I don't have to remember something that is a separate component. The weight trade-off is a non issue for me, but I'm only an ounce weenie; haven't stepped-up to the gram weenie status yet.

I would put my whoopie slings in second position and they are my standard set-up when going as light as possible. Still easy, still trustworthy.

Like you, I try to avoid knots. Not necessarily because I don't like them; once upon a time, a love for knots was beaten into me. My issue is that I like to winter camp and my fingers do not. Since I'm bigger than them, I win and we go. However, they make my life miserable if they are forced to work on small things like knots. I want my rigs to be just as easy to set-up and take-down with, or without, gloves being worn. Webbing just makes everything easier IMO.
    Trust nobody!

I am awaiting a BB and intend on using the webbing at first. I have all-in-one whoopie slings coming but I'll definitely see how I like the webbing. I use webbing on my ENO and will likely use the whoopies on that to try them out. Its fun to experiment and learn what you like. Have a fun and safe trip.

    That's a plan

Thanks for all the input, folks. I will definitely use the OEM suspension for this first trip. I imagine I will have enough interesting adjustments to make to keep me busy without complicating things further. Now I just have to figure out how to fit all this stuff in a Vapor Trail. So far it looks like I need more volume but perhaps I can work around this by creative packing and lashing.

A slight derail: Is there a good simple knot sheet I could print and bring, with some basic knots?

    Leaving in 3 days! Boyoboyoboyoboy!

    Soon to be (horizontal)

Here's a pretty good site to learn a few. I have found the bowline, clove hitch, sheet bend, prusik, girth hitch, rolling hitch and trucker's hitch to be useful and the ones I used most in the past.

If you carry an iPhone or iPodTouch you can download the free "WhatKnot" from Columbia Sportswear. It's a great reference tool that has step-by-step instructions for many of the knots you her about here on HF.

    That'd rock

Except I'm cell phone impaired. That is, I don't really like them. I'll talk to my hiking buddy and see if his phone will do that ap. That'd be awesome, have access to any number of knots.

    One more stupid newbie question?
I am making an undertarp ridgeline for my 8x10 campmore. I have nylon line and spectra. Which would make a better ridgeline? I had thought the nylon, so that I could prussic with spectra (small line over larger line) for the tarp edges, but I hear that nylon stretches.

    Cheers!

    The Spectra would work better.

There are some friction hitches that work well on lines of the same diameter...

Penburthy, Blakes, Klemheist <--- Im pretty sure 2 of these are spelled wrong.
