ADK hanging with my 7yo son this weekend

My son asked if we could go camping for Father's Day weekend, so we are!

We'll be paddling/portaging through 4 ponds into the St. Regis Canoe Area...Hoel to Turtle to Slang to Long, with a possible geocaching sidetrip to climb Long Pond Mountain in search of a cache up on top...

We'll both be sleeping in HHs, and hoping to skip tarps one or both nights...

I'll post some pics after we get back!

Have a good trip. The area looks like it's an awesome spot.

Nothing like some good Father-Son time.

    Ok, so I'm officially jealous!

The St. Regis Canoe Area is a true gem. Bring a fishing rod, the bass fishing in Long Pond is usually nothing short of fantastic.

Several of the designated campsites on Long Pond have trees close enough to the water's edge that you lay in bed, look out, and see nothing but water.

A few years ago I spend 4 days there camping on Long Pond, Monday through Thursday, and saw not a single other soul. It was bliss, at a time in my life when that solitude was exactly what I needed.

A lazy hike up Long Pond Mountain, especially on a nice day, brings you to one of my favorite napping spots in all of the ADK's. The bare rock at the summit warms up perfectly in the sunlight. I dare you to try to stay away for even 3 minutes after laying back on that big, warm, slab of stone. It's impossible.

Best of all is the reason you're going, because your son wants to take you for Father's Day! Have a great Father's Day out there.

I took my son on his first backpacking trip around age 8 (& his sister was 9) in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks. He still (age 14) remembers it vividly. Have fun. My son and I are heading for the Linville Gorge on Sunday.

    Yea jealous too.
I took my daughter to an area that I know of just north of Oxbow Lake, and all I heard of was, "can we go home now?".

Now she goes camping with her friends every summer.

    Have fun!

    We had a super time!

Pics to follow, but we paddled through 4 great ponds, portaged a couple of times, found a great spot to hang, took a fun hike, swam a ton, roasted marshmallows, hid under the tarp from a wild thunderstorm, found (and were visited by) an incredible variety of wildlife, and generally had a great weekend!
