Thanks for the pics. Love them. Reminds me of 1974 graduate studies field trip to this area and southern Colorado. Good report on your blog. Might have to head out for a Christmas holiday around Angel Fire, Spanish Peaks, and Sangre De Cristos.

Enjoyed your narrative on northern New Mexico hiking. I live in the central part of the state, Manzano Mtns area. It's bear and cougar country, too. I find myself doing the same thing you talk about: whistling and singing on the path, so as to make self known to the local residents.
I especially like the idea of a mask on the back of the head as a cougar deterrent. I often hike solo, but usually take my big Manzano Mountain Dog, Buddy, to carry a few things for me and to carry all his own food and water. I figure he does more to discourage rear attacks than anything I could do.
