    Cat-hammock

How bad of an idea is this: see attachment. I imagine sewing a channel in the ends and making it a gathered hammock (blackbird style). I also imagine that with the sides being longer than the middle you might end up with a flat lay with foot and head areas but a hammock that is effectively 10'?? Prolly not heaps different than the "cut it asym idea", but I'm just thinking out loud? Feed back welcome.

With the sides being longer than the center you'll end up with slack, floppy sides.

Some hammocks, like the Hennessys and Blackbirds treat the side(s) in a way that effectively shortens them rather than lengthens them.

    Just sharing. Not a criticism.

Reading the thread title, I thought it may have had something to do with this.

i too anticipated a hang catered to the feline persuasion.

but moving forward, make one and lets see how it performs. i for one have never really been for taught edges- makes for a dicey hammock entrance. especially after a bit of liquid campfire revelry..

I'll go out on a limb and predict that this won't be very comfortable at all. If the center is much tighter at all than the sides, it makes for a very unstable lay, in my experience. I personally, am a big proponent of the W whipping variants.

i wonder if it would actually make your head and feet hang lower than your hips, being as the angled lay already flattens out the lay WITH straight cut ends.

    this. '

EDIT: the more i think about it the better it sounds. What is the importance of having taught sides? if your sleeping horizontal wouldnt it seem better to have loose edges? and even more so, as MondayHopScotch mentioned, having a raised center point of the hammock and lower diagonal peaks would lend to the flatness aswell. consider the nose to tail profile:

..loose edges will also fall out..

This is true for a bridge. They are often made and hung with the center higher than the ends. At least in the early configurations. I must confess I have been following the more recent revisions made to the style. But I am totally unsure about the effect with a gathered end. My gut says it would not work very well. However I am not a designer and my gut has been known to react unfavorably to things other people find delicious.

I feel you'll end up with a severely tight centerline, causing calf pinch.
But hey, give it a whirl...if it fails your expectations, cut it straight and you still have a decent diy hammock.

I've made a few diy's with the gathered ends, and pulled the corners out an inch or two, then whipped it. It helps tighten the sides some. But your 12' deep cat cut seems extreme.
