Those are the instructions on the military kit. They say it's good for up to 50 washings, basically the life of the uniform.

Ticks seem to hit us hard up here from end of March (beginning of March this year) through mid June most years. See 1/3 as many per outing from mid June until frost, usually after Thanksgiving but was Christmas this year. Still, only takes one...

I've always used the Repel 6oz spray cans, good for one complete outfit each n last two weeks. $2 each at the end of season sale every year.

Very interesting if the Mil Soak Treatment lasts the life of the garment. Well worthwhile then. Have to look into it.

I wonder the same thing. Maybe it has something to do with the cost of the FDA or EPA approval? Not really sure who would regulate pesticide use for our clothing...

Gordon's Permethrin 10 available at Tractor Supply is an Emulsifiable Concentrate of 10% Permethrin, petroleum distillates, and emulsifiers. To replicate the military soak kit mix 36ml of Gordon's with 423ml water.

Put the mixture in a ziplock baggie with the item you are treating, let it soak for 3 hours, then hang it up to dry.
    Useful slap upside the face:

That's (so very close to) 1 part Gordons 12 parts water by volume

For gram counters: 1ml water weighs 1 gram. The 1ml of the Gordons likely weighs 0.95 gram. So, you can measure with your scale.

Very curious indeed, since its MSDS states it's exempt from TSCA (Toxic Substances Control Act) Regulations, per 40 CFR 710.
Normally the milspec stuff is good for our troops, not so much for the civy market and sometimes a tad strong.

Unless you get some at a Army surplus store, which is in a yellow can, green cap.

Perhaps the 3-hour soak time is due to the fact the instructions have you fold and roll up the pants. I could see needing to allow plenty of time for penetration in that case. Thanks for sharing.

I have recently been using the following product:
    Bonide BedBug Killer
    http://www.bonide.com/products/produ...ategory_id=573

    Here is the MSDS:
    http://www.bonide.com/lbonide/msds/msds573.pdf

Currently, Sawyers can be had from Amazon for approximately 66 cents per ounce.
Depending on the quantity of Bonides that you buy, it can be gotten between 16 and 32 cents per ounce. I recently bought 4 gallons for 32 dollars from Amazon (free shipping, Wow), but that deal is no longer available. That works out to 6 cents per ounce.

You could probably get a better cost per ounce by diluting a TS concentrated product, but I prefer Bonides because 1) its the exact same concentration as Sawyers so no fiddling with dilution 2) it is marketed to be applied to bedding ie next to skin 3) it is suspended in an aqueous solution rather than petroleum so no petroleum smell later and 4) much cheaper than Sawyers.

My testing with the product has proved it is as effective as Sawyers in all respects.
