Should i bring a TQ in summer?

Right now my total pack weight for a summer backpacking trip (all weight excluding items worn and consumables) is around 11lbs. I estimate that temperatures encountered will be in the 80-90’s+ during the day. At night, I see it getting down to around 70 or so. The highest elevations that I will encounter on my 5 day trek will be around 6000 feet (cheoah/waya bald, some peaks, etc).

Im considering not bringing my topquilt-a JRB No Sniveller. I will be Using a Yeti as an UQ, and since this is typically the coldest part of a hammock(underside) I see no reason to bring the TQ. Not bringing the TQ will take my baseweight down to around 9.5lbs.

A few notes on what clothing I will have packed/worn:

    Worn:
Cloudveil Cool Convertible pants (zip off legs in hammock due to possible poison plant contact)
Smart wool Adrenalines + Cool max liners
Icebreaker tech-t-lite shirt OR Cheap poly OR Cotton (haven’t decided, I will only pick one)
    Ex-officio boxer-briefs

    Packed:
    Mont-bell thermawrap
    Smart wool Adrenalines
    Cool Max Liners

I am thinking there is going to be no need to bring a TQ. Thoughts?

Ask Jack (Peter Pan) about the story of the thru hiker who kept freezing and said his UQ wasn't working. It's really a funny story to listen to. IMO, you should take the top quilt. You'll need some king of topside insulation, even in summer, particularly at higher elevations.

I would at least bring a light one. Good warm comfy sleep means good comfy hiking.
    9 pounds .... 11 pounds ... still impressive.

Are you sure it will be 70 degrees at night at 6000? I like to have something draped over me. It just makes me feel cozy. It couls be just a simple fleece square.

You could always invest in a Summer TQ? Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the JRB No Sniveller a 3 season quilt?! The weight of the JRB No Sniveller is 21oz, and you could get a lighter weight Summer Down TQ in at around 15oz, maybe less depending on whom you go through, this would also only add 1lb (or less) instead of the projected 2lb's!?!?
Just a thought as I too feel you should bring something!

I just had a thought is GoLite still running the sale? It was posted on here not that long ago with a code which gave you a discount! Me personally I would rather buy from one of the cottage makers from here, but for the price?!?!?!

Ike, I think you'll want something. You could probably be comfortable if you wore a thermal base layer at night, like Smartwool, but last night in 70 degree weather, I wanted at least a cotton sheet over me. And, at 6000, it will likely be 60 degrees instead of 70. Something to consider with the base layer idea is that you may be going to bed hot and sweating, where with the TQ, you could easily toss it aside until needed.

Amazing how light you've gotten. I'm at about 17 lbs without consumables.

@All:Well to be honest, i may be a bit optimistic. As some of you may know i stepped on a nail, so doing my trip will depend on my healing process. Which hopefully will be done by July 2. It will be 20 days in total by the time i step foot on the trail since i stepped foot on the nail.

Anyway, yea i will take it.

@Cranky: A lighter TQ is pretty much out of the question, i wont be buying anything for a good while, saving money, and when i do, it will be to purchase cuben for making my cuben UQ/TQ/Tarp.

@Salty: Would you like a copy of my gearlist, or have you already seen it? I will be upgrading it tonight, as i found some really tiny bottles to put fluids in, should shave off 3-4oz.
