It rather depends on the fabric the tarp is made out of. Sil is the same on either side so it should not matter in performance. Coated fabrics have a coating on one side and the regular fabric on the other. In that case I would usually want to put the coated side down. But I don't know how much difference it would really make.

The second consideration is construction. If you have a rolled hem you would want the roll to go toward the inside so as not to collect water as the rain runs down the tarp. If the edge is bound with grosgrain or some other material you will probably have a trough on both sides so the difference is negligible.

Finally, if you have side flat felled seams running head to foot as you would in a three or more paneled tarp (making the tarp wider by adding panels of fabric) those flat felled seams should be on the inside and folded in such a way they point to the edge of the tarp on their respective sides.

Clear as mud? Thought so. Truth be told... I don't worry about it too much.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I would think the coated side goes UP.

Coated side down. To protect it from abrasion, UV etc... +1 on what Rev says.

Hmm. I was more thinking the coating would allow for moisture to run off due to rain, etc.

i really cant tell if one side is coated or not. But the seam that runs down the middle of the tarp is sealed on one side. are you referring to that sealed line when youre saying coated side up or down?

You likely have a sil tarp. I don't know JRB's line well enough to be sure. Based on the coating being on the underside to protect it I would say the seam sealer would go inside. If you want the most authoritative voice on that particular tarp contact JRB. They are stand up guys and very customer service friendly. They could give you the straight scoop.

With the JRB 10X11 it's fairly simple to tell, the tie outs in the more or less middle of each side have to be outside to use them.
