    Bear report near Cataloochie

I finished a 3 day, 24 mile hike in the GSMNP this past weekend. We stayed south west of the Cataloochee area at camp site #52 on the second night. Saw numerous bear sign, tracks, scat etc. and one adolescent bear. He was just big enough for Mama to cut him loose. The bears were very active feeding on the berry patches as evidenced by the very obvious remains of their dinner plate sized scat. The good part was that most of the bear seemed to have left the area a day or so before we arrived. The bad part was they didn’t leave any berries for us. Stripped the berry patches clean!

    Excellent! I'm envious, Cookie!

Well, the GSM's are known for their black bear. I'm really hoping that we'll see a few, ( from a safe distance, of course ). This is gonna be a great trip with good friends!

Ran into this evil critter last Friday in the Smokies. It was only 18in from my leg when I noticed it coiled up ready to strike. **** thing only rattled once I jumped back! Its body was as big around as my forearm!

Nice! Not that it really matters, but where were you when you saw this fine looking rattler?

This is a clear example of why I sleep in a hammock and NOT on the ground!

It was on Sugarland Mt trail. We started on Clingmans Dome Rd and came out 12mi later at the Laurel Falls parking lot. A 3600ft drop in elev. This guy was about half way between old campsite 21 and Huskey Gap.

Thanks. I've not ever seen a Timber Rattler, and I sure don't want to see one as close as you were.

However, it would be pretty cool to see one from a safe distance though.

Are you planning on joining us?

Hickery, are you planning on bringing those pie irons?

RF & I will have the 119 Specials and if you bring "Walter", I figure we got a good chance!
