How to pack Hammock and Tarp....

What is the best way to pack your hammock and tarp to minimize the amount of space they take up in your pack?

Me personally ... looser the better either in the bag or skins ... that way you can put in your pack and compress to utilize space better. Tarp is in mesh skins that are carried in my outer pack area for easy access. Hammock in a double end bag that is sized so I can fit it in the pack without creating voids around it.

Just cram 'em in a stuff sack and shove 'em in your pack. IMO, it's not a bad idea to leave your tarp on the outside of your pack for quick access in case of a sudden downpour. Especially if you want to get out of said downpour quickly.

I'm really partial to packs with large mesh pockets on the "front"/outside/facing rear. My tarp (in a stuff sack with pegs) goes into this pocket along with rain gear and other odds-n-ends that I want to keep handy. My hammock (in a double end stuff sack) goes into the main pack or into a side mesh pocket. Both tarp and hammock stuff sacks are "too big" so there's some ability to conform to where/how they are packed.

My primary pack, FYI, is a ULA Circuit.

Seems to be a trend here...don't pack them tightly into a stuffsack, but make sure the stuffsack is big enough that the hammock can form to whatever is around it. That way you don't have the extra space between stuffsacks like you get when you put canned food into your pantry.

I use a Blackbishop Bag that has my hammock, underquilt and top quilt all in the same bag. Setup is very simple b/c it's all connected and easy to pack/unpack. I might change this a bit so I can set up the hammock for quick lunch stops w/o worrying about my quilts getting dirty, sweaty or wet. Will probably vary it by trip...

Re: the tarp, I often don't use a stuffsack or skins...just stuff it right into my outer mesh pocket so it's ready to set up in the rain. If I'm on a really wet trip, like the Smokies, I'll bring the skins so I can hang the tarp but keep it skinned.

My tarp goes into the mesh pocket on the back of my G4, and the hammock goes into a double end stuff sack and is the top item in the interior of the pack (this week at least).

I'm the same as most here. Tarp outside in a large pocket, hammock inside loosely in a stuff sac near the top. I've always stuffed my gear instead of rolling or folding. I was taught when I was a teenager that stuffing prevents wear and stretching that can occur after repeated folds. Don't know if this is actually true but its what I do and have always done and my gear is none the worse for wear.
