Long Time Lurker with a question

    Hi Guys,

Long time lurker, first time poster. My bud g0bez has gotten me all excited about making my own hammock and tarp. We have a long history on debating tent vs hammock camping. Recently during an overnight kayak trip down a local river, I decided that sleeping on rocks in the middle of a river isn't the most comfortable thing to do. After talking with g0bez about his kayaking trip this fall and hearing that he's going to be hammock camping, I've decided to give making my own a shot.

I have lots of resources from this website on materials and such (thanks to everyone who has shared their knowledge on everything hammocks). I did however find some camouflage 100% nylon material on sale at hancock fabrics.

    http://www.hancockfabrics.com/Green-...VVviewprod.htm

    $2.00 a yard

Has anyone had experience with this material? I doesn't say that it is Rip-Stop worthy. I would assume that it isn't. Would it be strong enough to use a single layer as a hammock or would I have to double it? At $2/yard I don't think I can go wrong?

    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forums, dmccoy26.

I don't have any experience with that material. My experience with lightweight, non-ripstop material says that the material would likely hold me (I weigh about 160.) However, the non-ripstop materials tend to tear more easily and let you down when you are counting on it. However, the material you are looking at may be heavier and hold up.

if you are unsure- get 6-8 yds and make a two layer hammock. This will also allow a place for the pad if you do not have/use an underquilt. KM

It is hard to tell from the fabric description and picture if it is ripstop. Krugd's suggestion to get enough material to make a double layer hammock is solid advice. Though depending on your weight you could try making single layer. But be sure to sling it low to the ground the first time or two. Just in case the material is not up to snuff.

In my experience the safety factor of ripstop is overrated. Ripstop was developed for lightweight gear and clothing. In those applications it does help a tear from increasing. However when used as a hammock bed I doubt very much it would be of any great advantage because of the weights involved. I can and have torn ripstop with my bare hands without any more difficulty than taffeta of equal weight. (taffeta is a weave pattern that comes in many fiber contents and weights) Many commercial hammocks use taffeta and not ripstop for the hammock bodies.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Thanks for the advice guys. I really appreciate the quick response. This afternoon, I put in an order for 10 yards. That should be enough to make a hammock and a rain fly. Tho, I'll have to waterproof the rain fly.

I know i've read this on the forum, but now I can't find it.

What is the normal rule for the length of the hammock verses a person's height. I'm 6 ft. How much longer should a DIY camping hammock be?

IIRC, Ed Speer recommends 2 feet longer than your height. I suspect many here might find that on the short side. Personally, I like mine about that size. I'm 6'2" @ 190-200 lbs and my hammocks range between 96" and 104" between the "knots". Add extra on each end to account for the knots. I usually start with 9' (i.e., 108") of material before sewing the edging.
