I have been using a pad setup in the hammock for awhile now and have decided to switch to a UQ. Money is tight now so it can't break the bank. It also needs to be able to go down to 20 degrees. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Give Macentyre´s IX UQ´s a look - simple, effective and cheaper than down products.
And the modular concept lets you use it all year round - just add layers...
Or you could go the DIY way - it´s pretty easy to convert a rectangular sleepingbag to a underquilt.

To much time on your hands? Waste some time here
IX UQ $60 are the cheapest you are going to find
next would be the AHE synth 2/3 UQ $125
next would be Stormcrows crownest at $185
i think Te-wa's qult is $180...not sure maybe he will chime in
Warbonnet outdoors the Yeti $200
then JRB 3 season quilts start around $250
all these quilts are very good ...
these are all 3 season UQ...the only one that will get you below 30 degrees is the crowsnest 25 degrees...
most 3 season quilts limits are 30 degrees ....colder if you are a warm sleeper
after that you need a winter quilt ...they cost more
really...if i were you i would save up and get the UQ you really want ...
your going to end up getting it anyway

It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold
you could also try one of Hangout's Daughter's UQ's. check this thread....

I'm drawn to the open country. Its where the world makes the most sense. When I put myself out there I always return with something new.
You could make something cheap for now - PLUQ or sleeping bag UQ or something like that and save up for something nice and wintery.
Another option...keep using your pad WITH a Speer Pad Extender...might be able to still buy them but can easily make your own.
Another option--the MacIX...tried and true with my experience
Next option..considering the above posts..I think Te-Wa has a summer down UQ for $140; if you get one of these AND a MacIX system you can mix/match layers and easily get to the 20s and every temp between there and using no UQ at all (which for me would be 70 and up).
I've used a MacIX and a down 2/3's UQ and they work well together.
Thanks for the help everyone I have decided to save and get one that I really want. I guess I will be able to deal with a pad a little longer.
I saw a recent thread where a fleece blanket was attached to the hammock with grip clips.
As a supplement to your pad, it may help you get to a lower temp.
I imagine there is a limit to the thickness of the blanket that can be attached with the grip clips.
