$8 Car Windshield Sun Shade Pad

In search of a cheap ultralight pad, I have come up with the idea of using a large Car Windsheild Sun Shade. It's very light, cheap, it has thermal heat reflective properties and doesn't make the loud krinkling noise like a space blanket. It can be rolled up, or folded into a fairly compact unit. I went to Wally World and picked up one for $8 that is 67" long. The sun shade advertizes 40% heat reflection, but haven't tried using it yet. Has Anyone elese tried this and if so how was it?

I'm going camping this weekend, and will keep everyone posted on how it goes. If it works well, I might even try cutting it into a mummy bag shape.

I did about 9 years ago ... works but you're going to have condensation problems

Those were used by a lot of folks two or three years ago. Ultimately, the foam just isn't as efficient per weight as some of the other CCF pads that are available.

Many have moved on to more breathable insulation options. You have to be careful about using vapor barriers to avoid condensation.

Yeah ... you'll have a damp sleeping bag ... breathable is better in most cases. If you strap it under the hammock you'll have a damp sleeping bag and hammock.

It works, after a fashion. I prefer it as a light weight add on in the super cold times I camp (below 20 degrees) AND it is UNDER my ccf pad AND I am wearing winter clothing. Under those conditions I have had minimal condensation & it adds 10 - 15 to my Underquilt.

Summer time, I wake up WET.

i used one too about 3 years ago...got to love fads LOL

anyway it will work but you will have problems with you bag or quilt getting wet....

i used one with a 2/3 ccf pad that i joined together with velcro....

worked pretty good .....for what it was
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

I use one in the summer. Put lines of silicone sealant on the bottom so that the pad doesn't slide down the hammock while you sleep.

I tried one of these and woke up so hot it was crazy! Will be good for fall camping though, and those lines of silicone on one side to keep it from sliding is a fab idea!
