Poncho, adapted for undercover use

I found this Poncho on top of a heap of trash and, of course, had to take it with me

Sil-nylon, for free, and only in need of some soap

I cut some holes in the channels on the small sides and melted the fringes with a match. Than a piece of thin cord was threaded through all of them. The cord is tied to the matal rings at the corners. In the middle it is threaded through the ring and a key ring and a toggle are attatched.

When spread out, the cord completely dissappears in the nylon tunnel, only the toggle is potruding.
I can pull it together with this and it looks like this

It the wraps around the lower part of the hammock and, with a cheap poncho linerattatched inside, is plenty warm for autumnal nights.

Since the liner cost only € 20,- and its slit for the head is homemade, this is a nice and cheap way to have a warm back.

it says coated nylon, which is not the same as silnylon. still a good find though. might double as a tarp too.

I've spent many miserable nights under one of those things, in a lot of different countries. That would be urethane coated, not silnylon. I have yet to see any camo silnylon.

Amen brother! As a "light" infantry scout I lived in my poncho hooch about 10 months out of the year. Our motto was "pack light and freeze at night". I have to admit though, with just my poncho and 5 camo bungee cords, I had a shelter that was fast to set up and I always stayed dry. Nice find and I'll bet it will work well as an underquilt.

I think that you could probably do this with a sin=nylon poncho like a Equinox or something. If I remember right the GI poncho weighs about 24 ounces so it isn't the lightest thing in the world - BUT it is a good idea and if you went sil-nylon you could probably get this down to about 7 ounces for about $40 - http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/st...0226&langId=-1

No sil nylon? On a second thought, that makes sense. It feels quite slick to the touch, but isnt so horribly noisy. I have other ponchos and its always a mixed bag. tjhe pu-coated ones are heavy and the sil-coated ones far too noisy.
Looking not happy? Well, a bit grumpy, maybe

I will use this poncho together with a cheap 28oz poncho liner as underquilt, until my order from JRB arrives.
Then it will be used solely when I am out with the kids, they wreck everything, you know

i wonder if a silnylon poncho would take the stress of the cord being pulled as the old military poncho does.

Too bad they don't come in a green! Only blue, Might be a project I might have to add to my list for making though!
