Ditch your bed, hang a hammock

I've noticed that many who camp in hammocks sleep on a mattress the rest of the time. I say no more! Really, all it takes are some 2x4's, a drill, and some lag screws to get your walls mount-worthy.

If you need to place your hooks in-between studs, screw two 2x4's horozontally to the studs on either side, one above your mount location and the other below. Screw another on, attaching it vertically to your two horizontal 2x4's, then attach your hook to that.

If your lucky enough to have a stud behind where you want to mount, don't simply attach your hook! Instead, attach a 2x4 to the stud with lag screws at either end, and your hook to the 2x4. That way, the pressure will be distributed to a larger area, reducing the likelihood of a failure.

My hammock is hung up using both these methods and has never caused me any grief. Hope this helps!

I don't think I'll be giving up my King size Intellibed any time soon. Granted, hammocking has added another 20 years to my camping / backpacking life, it still doesn't compare to my bed at home, IMO. I applaud those "true believers" that enjoy their hammaocks so much they sleep in them at home. I'm just not there, yet.

I hear you. For me, my crummy little box-spring twin bed was easy to give up. I just wanted to share for others like me

There are numerous threads dating back quite a while exploring the same idea. Also much discussion about the wisdom and efficacy of attaching to the wall.

A week ago I pulled a muscle in my back... high up like under the shoulder blade. Not a big deal; it only twinged when I moved in a strange manner. i could rarely replicate it. i went camping and slept in the hammock and was fine. The next night at home I slept in bed. When I woke up my back was noticeably sore. During the day, my walking etc alleviated the pain. That night however, I awoke in the middle of the night with so much pain I could move. Any slight movement felt like death. After 15 minutes I managed to get myself out of bed. The next two nights I slept in my hammock and was fine. (Slight soreness when I awoke.) I tried the bed one more night and the pain returned. i spent the last 3 nights in my hammock and I think the pain is gone.

After I receive my nx-150, and enjoy it one summer and one winter . . .
    I may then purchase a little-lot . . .
    (Festus once said
"But Doc, you can have a lot or a little but you can't have a lot of little nor a little lot . . . just kaint be. ")

. . . I will hang my hammock on this little lot,
and then I will build a house around it.

    Yea.

The wife & I painted our bedroom this afternoon and haven't moved stuff back into the room yet, except my gear cabinet, of course. She'll be on the couch tonight and I'll get to try out my newest DIY hammock in the basement. I might not be in a big hurry to get back into our bedroom.

The only mattress we have in the house is a futon, but that's where the dog sleeps. We have a CT thru-hiker staying with us tonight because of bad storms and I don't think he believed me when I told him we didn't have any beds. Last time I checked, he was snoring from inside one of our Mayans.
