What a super lesson and a great way to learn it first hand (never gonna forget this one!)

We've all at least considered using those things... (I know I have) but the force a hammock puts on trees is pretty darn amazing (Some assembly required - trig not included).

Glad it was only your backside that hit the ground!

Only hang as high as you're willing to fall! Glad you're OK - Jealous for your coming dutch-clips - They are my next toy

Note to self.. when ever you hang a hammock with the intent of using it... it is "for real".

About a foot, maybe 18". I didn't even feel the impact because on my way down I knew that some laughing (at me) would follow.

I have used some that were stamped 175lb rated. Never fell, but no longer use them.
The trees are drawing me near, I've got to find out why?

I feel for you! Quite awhile back I used some salvaged webbing that I found on the road side. To make a pair of tree straps. I was doing a test hang with them in the yard. Once rigged I sat in the hammock and did a few test bounces. All was good or so I thought. I swung my legs up into the hammock and put my arms behind my head. Feeling smug and tickled at being so frugal and helping to clean up the roadise at the same time. I laid there for a minute or two trying different positions. Then without warning I found myself hitting the ground with a thud. After realizing that I did not seem to be hurt. I scrambled to my feet looking around to make sure that no body had seen me. I then looked at the head end strap and found that it had broken completely in two. The foot end strap also showed signs that it was getting ready to separate. Then lessen learned for me was. Never try to skimp and save on equipment or gear that will be supporting your weight.

Never hang higher than you are willing to fall...especially if you're hanging on a "keychain."

    No harm, no foul.

Additionally my first "real" hang also gave me my first "real" gobs of sap on my straps.
