Explorer Deluxe Asym under mosquito protection

Hi,

I have an Explorer Deluxe Asym on the way. I read after ordering it that this model is not going to have the protection needed for really bad mosquito areas like the Backpacker Asym and Explorer Ultralight models. How do you folks retrofit an Explorer with another layer to protect your skin if it comes in contact with the bottom? I was thinking about putting a poly undercover in the same shape of the hammock or maybe string mosquito netting under it.

Also how do you deal with the bottom entrance if you add bottom protection?

You want to consider an underquilt for other reasons as well.

really it rarelly ever happens, plus if you had a pad or uq they cant get you. your in the woods bug bites happen lol

I'm a big fan of Permethrin on my hammocks, packs, clothing, boots, webbing, quilts, etc. Stuff works like a charm.

if you are on your rollmat or in your sleeping bag then they wont bite you anyway... ive used it in the jungle for months and months on end and only found it to be a problem once or twice...

I don't know about the new zip models but the Explorer UL and Delux have the same construction and fabrics at least in the older models. I leave my Super Shelter undercover on all the time so I don't ever have a problem.

I have slept on top of a sleeping pad, and heard the mozzies swarming above the bug net. Don'rt remember getting bitten through the fabric as I slept on the pad.

Oh, and should be getting my MollyMac IX UQ very soon.

Great. Thank you everyone. I think I am going to make a netting under cover with some some material I found at the joann fabrics last night. I'll be in the Amazon jungle, and I'm concerned about having too much undercover because of the temperatures in the early night. And the critters are sometimes quite pervasive there. Temperatures drop later in the night, so I'll be in a bag then. Until then, I'll be damp hot and uncomfortable.. just want to avoid lots of mosquito bites to the equation.

Hey Bob. If you are going to be in a bag later, you might as well just sleep on top of it until you're ready to cover up. That will keep the bugs at bay without having to mess around with bug netting. Another option is to use the stock tarp as an undercover as described on Just Jeff's site and developed by Gear Collector http://www.tothewoods.net/ImagesStay...flyProject.pdf. Of course that is only an option if you have purchased a larger tarp like all the cool kids are doing these days. Anyway, best of luck and enjoy your trip!
