really there is no need to get into details at this time...like i said it was just something i was thinking about ....it probly won't even happen

as for being fined...yes they can...alot of the shelters that are near the roads in my area have care takers on site(club property) and they can ask you to leave
or have you removed.....and alot of them have posted signs as well
i'm just telling you what i was told...
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

    Who are "they"?

Members of the maintaining clubs do not have police powers, as was mentioned earlier, and can not fine you, or demand ID, or demand anything of you.

Now if a caretaker happens to be a NPS Ranger and you are on NPS land, that is a different story.

The property is not owned by the clubs, it's owned by either the Federal Govt. via NPS or it's owned by the State via PGC or DCNR.

Again, who are "they"? Club members can ask you to do anything they want, they can't make you do anything. They also can't have you removed. They can call the police, but unless your breaking a law, or posing a threat, they can't do anything either.

I don't see how a group of hammockers hanging near a shelter pose a problem. ATC wants the camping activity done in designated spots, such as around shelters. And hammockers aren't taking up shelter space. Just my .02

Please don't take my post personally, I tend to just get to the point. It does sound to me like some maintainers, whose trail work I appreciate, may be a bit overzealous in what they think they can control.

The "property" is not owned by the club. However, I believe the _shelter_ is in as much as the maintaining club built it, maintains it and can remove it at will. The can and do set policies and rules regarding its use. However, policy rules and legal standing are two different things.

But there are still no police powers invested in the maintaining clubs.

    Hey RamblinRev:
How about you and I (and however else wants to come) go out for a hang this Wednesday Thursday Friday or Saturday? July 14, 15, 16, or 17 ??
It can be a short hike in, that will be fine with me. As this is my first real hang ( other than my backyard), I need to use this as a learning experiance anyways from someone like yourself with experiance in Hammock camping.
You pick the time and place, and I will be there. It can be handy to Milton, or whereever you prefer. Let me know!! I will trust on your experiance!!
It can be one night or two, whatever works for ya!!
    Any Ideas???

I gotta run the dates past the wife but it looks promising for at least some of those. A very good friend of ours has some car problems and so we loaned out one of our vehicles to her. I'll need to see when that will be coming back. Flamingo is at work atm so I'll be checking with her this evening. I'll get back to this later this evening.

I got my loaned out ca back and so transportation issues are set for the weekend. I would suggest we go for Fri and Sat night leaving Sunday to return home. What kind of amenities do you want? Picnic table? Fire pit? Local pit toilets? All this would be on forest lands so no fees would apply but different places would provide different sets of amenities.

No big deal on animities for me, but a table is always nice. Availability of water is good. A small fire is good, Don't really need a pit, as long as no trace principles are applied. We will need shade around the hammocks-It may be a warm weekend.
Other than that, I am good to go.
You tell me where and when to meet on Friday.
I will PM you my cell

    Ramlinrev:
Thanks for the PM on your #, I'll be given you a call this evening.
Did ya come up with a place for a Pa. Hang this weekend?
My hammock keeps staring at me saying--I need to get out!!!!
    Anyways, let me know.
I actually am looking forward to cooler weather this fall to try out the Clark North American hammock bottom pockets. Once I figure out what works in a clark pocket for warmth, I will be better set for fall winter camping. I just can't imagine the Clark under belly pockets being enough with just clothing. I may end up buying one of Storm Crows under quilts, or making my own speciality items for filling in the pockets for insulation. Time will tell.
    I'll be in touch.
