Erie Canal - yea or nay?

A couple I met on the C&O canal liked biking on the Erie. They don't hammock so they couldn't tell me if it was a go or not.

Has anyone hammocked on the Erie? Tell me spots I should hit & which to avoid, and any other tidbits you can think of to guide me.

I believe that there are camp sites every 10 miles or so. I don't know if there are trees for hanging in.

Having just moved here from Syracuse, I know several of the locations they are camping at. Some have trees at the colleges, but not sure if thats where the "tent city" will be located. others are big open fields with no trees. I think if you could do this with some freedom of choosing your hanging site, it might be doable, but it seems they planned the camping sites for big open flat grassy areas- with tenting in mind. Some of the locations like Burnett park in Syracuse, Ft Stanwix in Rome are in the city.

Looks like a fun ride to do and I would love to do it, but maybe would need different plans if I wanted to hang exclusively- unless you had a hammock stand transported to each location...
