This would be a very ambitious project but what if the post spacing for the sun shade also matched the span you want for your hammock?

Exactly what I was thinking.
Great view.
The stove / fireplace is just brilliant.
Well done !
I have a swingset I built 13 years ago with a platform on top for the whole family to sleep on. Worked great. Fast forward 7 or 8 years and my son and I found that by hanging the swings themselves over the top, we could just hang two hammocks underneath. But the tarp had to be routed around part of the swingset and there wasn't any extra length for the hammocks themselves. Sooo....
I installed a PVC pipe about 30" deep about 14 feet from a large tree in the yard. Made the hole by driving a pipe section into the ground (what a hassle pulling it back out after each 2 to 3 inch section). Inserted the PVC to exactly ground level so I can put a cap over it and the grass will hide it. When I want to hang, I remove the cap and slip a galvanized metal pipe about 2" in diameter into the PVC. I put the cap on top of the pipe so I don't lose it.
This setup works very well but a few observations are:
+ It's good to make a "double wrap" around the pipe with suspension straps as there is not enough friction to absolutely ensure non-slippage otherwise. If using wood, I'd route or sand the edges to avoid wear on the straps.
+ Since I didn't set the sleeve in concrete, the pipe tilts in slightly when the hammock is loaded. Not enough to affect the hammock but the tarp slackens just a bit - like a stock HH tarp that is attached to the hammock suspension. To avoid this, I use a pressure treated 2x2 for the tarp. I cut the ground end at an angle and stake out from near the top to two places and let the tarp provide the third point of pulling.
+ 14' is too close for tarps. It works okay but there are time with a Speer Winter Tarp that I would like an additional 1 to 2 feet to play with.
The photo shows the swingset in the background and the pipe in the foreground. Sorry that snow is covering so much. That's a SWT over a WBBB. You can see the 2x2 used for the tarp, which has an experimental over the tarp single ridgeline.

These are some fabulous ideas. Thanks for the measurements, jal. And although the full patio looks a tad ambitious for me, the example with the stove is excellent.
Hmmm, pvc with take-out galvanized 2 inch pipe. Hmmm... thinking. Thanks all.
Has anyone built a hammock stand with these footing?
One of my favorite hammock tress blew down yesterday in the storm and I am thinking about making a stand using these footings without a top rail.
edit: added the files as attachments again in case anyone missed which post I was referencing.

LOL, I guess not.
I just finished my "Hammock Lab" in the back yard using the footing instructions given. I'm going to wait a week for the cement to cure before I hang anything off them. There are three posts in a corner formation which present three hang possibilities: 12' 14' and 18'. Separated from the busy road by a privacy fence and a soon to be stacked pile of firewood. It's also got a portable fire place so we can camp in the yard.
Thanks to those that participated in this original thread. I couldn't have done it without ya!
