Why do you have the gear you have?

New guy question: Why have you chosen the gear you use? Many of you (as I've read) have multiple hammocks, but why do you use the one you use? I'm looking at the HH because it seems easy to get in and out and the price is right. But, why doesn't every have one? Obviously, DIYers will make their own, and i will eventually, but I don't want to wait that long. Thanks.

Because each has it's own advantages and disadvantages. I use the one that will serve the present purpose best.

Why do women (in general) have so many shoes?
Why do men (in general) feel the need to have 642 screwdrivers?

Because each situation is different and being able to take a hammock that may have one or two features that are 'important' for the trip at hand is a nice thing.

Everyone is different but so is every hammock, some are more comfortable than others for some people. And of coarse what will work for me may not work for you.

With that out of the way. I use a Warbonnet Black Bird, as do many others here because I find it more comfortable than many of the others that I have tried. I bought a HH first and nearly gave up on hammocks, I just could not get comfortable in it. The WBBB on the other hand was instantaneous comfort. For new folks we often try to recommend that you try to go to one of the hangs or try to get together with someone local that has a few for you to try, even for a few minutes. That will help you a lot to not only see but feel the difference from one model and design to another.

    Welcome by the way.

The first comfortable hammock I tried was a Clark. That's what I bought first. I love it too and that's the one I take on all camping, hiking, kayaking, backpacking trips. But after I got it, other members of my family wanted to "hang out" with me in the back yard. So I couldn't afford any more Clarks and I bought some of the "cheap-o" hammocks. Even though they're cheap, they're comfortable and some of them I've outfited with whoopies and netting so my family can camp with me. Sometimes, I'll hang one up out back just to lay around in. I've found that when I have a migrane that if I hang out out back that the headache eases up a bit. Anyways, I use my Clark because it's like being in a 4 or 5 star hotel. I can't get any better than that.

So why doesn't everyone buy a Clark?? I think it's because we're all different and hammocks too are all different. My Clark may not be the cat's meow for you and your HH isn't the 5 star motel for me.

I have worked construction for a lot of years C and I don't think I have 10 screw drivers.... Some of us just have to be able to say they have the most

My first (recent) was store bought, an ENO knock-off. But my first diy hammock took about 6 hours at first. Most of that time was spent arguing with the machine. Now its considerably less. An hour or two. Thats a short time. No wait. Go to your local fabric store and get building.

For me it has been a process of trying out different gear to see what I like, and what works best for what I'm doing. Doing that has allowed me to collect a few different hammocks/tarp/insulation combos that I would use under different circumstances. At this point I could probably cull it down to 2, if I were so inclined.

I do find that the longer I hammock, the simpler my chosen gear becomes.
