    Nothin draws flies like Shugger

or, New Guy from Kansas (and ain't that Shug entertainin'?)

Hiya, all! I'm Chris. I've been reading HF for a week or two now--I'm loving the concept of hammock camping. I've started to put together a beginner's set, and have done a couple of dry runs in a local park and then a single night's hang at a nearby lake's "primitive campground" (gotta love free!).

    My gear so far:

    ENO Doublenest Hammock
    ENO Slap Straps Pro
A cheap $10 mosquito net (cover pic shows it over a camping cot)
An $8 9x12 tarp (hardware store)
$5 sleeping bag from a thrift store
Exercise mat borrowed from a friend
guyline with homemade shock cord tensioners, for the tarp
550 paracord for various ridgelines and whatknots

My first overnight hang was...a success, but tweaking is needed. Judging from what I think I'm getting in reading up since, the fact that I slept fetal most of the night (I don't normally sleep fetal) indicates I didn't have adequate sag. After doing some research, I installed a structural ridgeline to the hammock. We'll see if that helps me lie flatter (more flat? Michael Flatley?) on more of a diagonal next time.

I think my next investment is going to be whoopie slings. One for the structural ridgeline and two to hang the hammock--the slap straps don't give me enough versatility. The trees have to be pretty close or the hammock won't reach!

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and say "hi"...so, um...hi. Thanks, Shug, for roping me in (I showed your videos to several friends and family...most of them looked back at me and said, "Oh my god...it's YOU." Must be the random singing, character voices, and errant absurdity. Gotta love a performance background!)...and Prof Hammock and others for lots of good info. Maybe someday I'll get to meet some of you and maybe, hope against hopes, get to help you look for ticks at trail's end!

    (Just kidding. About the ticks.)

Greetings from your neighbor to the south. You've got a good start on things, and will get it tweaked in no time! Welcome to HF.

Thanks! I'm less than ecstatic about the results I got with my cheap bug net...I would've been better off making a tube of tulle or similar. I'm considering just breaking down and buying a specialty hammock bug net...like the ENO guardian bug net, for example. I'm a little short on funds currently (getting ready for a move), so I have some time to research and plan my next set of purchases.

Tweaking your gear is an on going process that never stops. Perhaps you can modify your netting so that it will work better for you. Welcome to the forums.

@Mac: thanks! If my dad's research is any indication, I have a fair amount of Scottish in me somewhere....

    @Perkolady: thanks! And hi.

@Shug: and a big "Hey" back atcha! Question for you: where does the "backwoods" dialect come from? I hear the Irish and occasionally the Minnesotan...did you live a stretch in more southerly winds?

@Poppabear: I did a quick and dirty mod on the net--I basically cut two holes and passed the hammock through them. It took care of the "gathering all up in my face" problem and has potential to help with the "through the hammock--mozzies love my undercarriage" issue (once I gather it somehow). The only issue is that it's not QUITE wide enough to cover the entire length of the hammock, so I'm ending up with two large holes the crawlies can visit me through. :P

Yes, welcome. About the tweaking......it's true, it NEVER stops! Thank God! That's the part I love best.
