In researching for my coastal texas kayak trip I came across another that had done the trip and has plans to do it again in Hobie Adventure Island sailing trimaran kayak, and he has plans to camp out like this!

How is that PVC not breaking?
Once the older fella climbs into his HH, you can see the strut on the stern flex. How, oh how, is it not snapping? I've been toying with a similar design, but much beefier. I'm now wondering if I'm not overthinking the issue. This is about where I started conceptually, but began thinking of additional structural framing within the kayak hull. At the very least, my plan was/is to use square aluminum tubing for the struts. I still can't believe the PVC didn't break, but I don't think it would hold-up long term. I need something that will last 5 months in adverse conditions. Still, gives me inspiration for the K.I.S.S. methodology.

It is amazing it even lasted thru the video
but I'd like to know about an extended field report, if one exists.
I tried to imbed the video but it didn't work for me,
and i tried three different ways.
who and how? ......
I'm wondering about the hard points where the shrouds and stays are attached. The term "non-design forces" comes to mind.

More of a tri-marran than a kayak, but still gives the theory some hope, cool.
now where to put the sattelite dish, hmmmmm.
Ambulo tua ambulo.
I fixed it up for you. Directions here.

Upon further reflection, I think the genius of his design is the fact that the boat itself is bearing a lot of the weight because of the way he looped his webbing under the hull. I'm far, far, far, far, far, far removed from being fluent in physics, but it seems the struts are only used as a fulcrum point of sorts.
Still, I can't wrap my mind around those PVC struts and their connection points with the boat. They should have snapped the moment it was weighted!

Has PVC broken for you guys in hammock stands before? I use a 2.5-ft length of 1-inch diameter schedule 40 as a breaker bar extension (I call it the easy button) to loosen stuck bolts. I've jumped on the end of it, lowered the car onto it for leverage... all kinds of abuse, and it's never cracked over the years.
Now if I have the clearance and the need, there's also the big easy button, a four-foot length of 2-inch steel pipe...

If you flatter yourself that you are all over comfortable, and have been so a long time, then you cannot be said to be comfortable any more. - Herman Melville
A short length of PVC I could see taking some heavy loads. However, his struts were at least 5', if not 6', long. I've got some 1.5" S40 PVC at home. I'm going to go home tonight and see what it takes to break it.
Love, love, love, destructive testing.
