If you have to make a choice choose a reverse stitch over the zig-zag. Zig-zag is absolutely totally optional when making gear. It is needed for stretch fabrics but not much gear is made from that.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.
"Bless you child, when you set out to thread a needle don't hold the thread still and fetch the needle up to it; hold the needle still and poke the thread at it; that's the way a woman most always does, but a man always does t'other way."

My SEWING MACHINE is an $89.00 Brother that I bought five years or more ago. It still works great. Straight, zigzag and reverse is all it does. The adjustments available are thread tension, stitch length and zigzag width. That's it. And I've used it for LOTS of projects.
I originally bought it for my wife. She's used it about 1% of the time that I have.
As to the masculinity involved in using a SEWING MACHINE? All the women in the fabric and sewing store love me to death. Something about a man that is extremely comfortable about his masculinity, I guess.
This is most disturbing... a faction of relatively new HFers, who speak blasphemy and use dirty words... I need reinforcements!

Trust me, I've called it worse names before....with no respect intended..at the time.
Of course when its working right,, "oh baby, I love you" is spoken quite regularly.
It's a love/hate relationship

Just remember how many of the great couture houses were started by men. Sewing men and their sewing machines. When I first saw thread injector I thought it was something akin to some forum editing feature.
Every Special interest group has their 'insider' jargon.. you'll pick it up quickly, I'm sure. KM
One of the things to remember is when the "thread injector" terminology became popular the DIY community here was much smaller and ironically the most active posters were the men. With the increased interest and origin of the term disappearing into oblivion it is not surprising some folks are confused by its use.
