i usually hang the top of my ridgeline about eye level..so i can enter and exit with ease..i make darn sure of my ropes and knots before i enter..after that i sleep soundly..i inspect my gear after every trip no matter how minor,...for me i want to trust my gear...if i didnt i would not be a hanger

Are you talking about the distance from your bum to the ground once in the hammock?
Mine is a top loader and I always find that I end up about 6" off the ground. I would like to be a lot higher but then getting into the hammock is too hard with the sides way up high.

I tend to hang high (tied off above head level), but I am reconsidering the practice since I have developed a paranoia that my tree huggers may fail

Hang and adjust to where the laden hammock is chair height when sitting...probably about 16-20 inches above the ground.

DGrav = 6'3". Of course there is a bit of a problem when I hang my wifes (who is only 5'6") hammock at the same height!

depends on which hammock I am using and what the weather situation is

HH Explorer Deluxe, warm dry weather - hang so I can just barely get my butt into the hammock without standing on tiptoes - 36 inches or so before I get in and it stretches

HH, cold / wet / windy weather - hang so that the MacCat tarp is pulled down to ground level to block most of the wind - maybe 10 inches or so

TrekLight - hang so that I can get out of it easily - 16 inch or so when I'm in it, maybe 24 when I'm not in it

My hammock is still stretching, since I was unable to go out very much this year due to a injured ankle. Anyway, I tend to end up just 6" off the ground. However, when I start I am about 2.5' off the ground. I am only 5'7" so I have to hang it a bit lower than someone that is 6'. I end up tying off at about forehead level. I have been debating on putting above my head.

I'm 5'7" also and find that forehead height gives a "low" hang I end up 3"-8" off the ground... If I hang about foot higher (so above my head, but not as high as I can reach) I end up that much higher... Its a bit tricky to get into the hammock the first time but once I've been in its easier...
