For me it depends on the situation.

If I am just using the hammock as a lounger around camp, I usually have it pretty low. Or, if it's cold I'll also have it low along with the tarp down around it. If it's nice out, though, I like to hang pretty high up (waist level, maybe).

I have been a little more cautious, though, when I'm hanging above terrain that might injure me if I were to fall out. In that kind of situation, I hang as low as reasonably possible.

I like to hang so that my feet can tough the ground if I am sitting on the edge of the hammock, probably about 8" from the ground.

When I'm in my hammock, usually I am about 12-18" off the deck when I'm laying down. That's a good comfortable height for me. It makes for easy loading and unloading of the hammock as well as not giving me too far to fall in the case of failure.

I hang it where it's easy to sit in and get out of with little effort. If it's too low it's much more difficult to remove yourself. After I sit in it I like to be at the height of your average chair.

With my Treklight double, that closely resembles me. Tons of sag.

Totally depends on my mood and where I'm hangin. Sometimes I like a low-rider and other times I like a monster truck. I'll tell ya this much; for two or three weeks after my first fall; I went low, low, low, low, low.

In my short experience I've found that I like to be able to just reach the ground with my feet while still sitting somewhere between the center and front-center of the hammock. Any lower and I have to struggle to stand up. Any higher and I struggle to get my feet to touch the ground.

If you’re gonna be stupid, you'd better be tough.

The first one was a real fall due to negligence on my part. The following falls have all been tests and have usually been the result of a simple oversight. The difference being I knew I was testing and had the appropriate padding beneath. I might be a slow learner, but I do learn.
