    Lightbulb Military Hammocks

Had an interesting lunch yesterday. One of my guys over here in Indonesia and I stopped at a local restaurant out side of Surabaya and near an Army base. A Captain in the Indonesia Army saw the Gorge Rat Patch on my messenger bag and started a conversation which involve sharing some photos on my iPhone of the Gorge and pictures of hammocks caught his attention.

Not sure how this will pan out but he took my business card and said he'd make sure to get me an Indonesia Miliary Jungle Hammock to take back with me. If it happens great ... I'm sure it's heavy but hey it's a hammock and who knows what features it may have that we can clone to something else.

I'll be posting pic's if and when he delivers ... never know about these things. But it got me to thinking. Some might say that's not necessarily a good thing ... but any of you guys or gals have any military hammock gear? How about posting pictures here if you do.

My very first hammock back in the 70's was a Vietnam era Jungle Hammock ... loved it and hated it. Wish I'd kept it.

Those gorge rats have infected every level of society. Now they are sneaking their way into the minds and supply chains of the military! Be warned people, call your congress man before they are infiltrated as well. Mild manored international businessman my foot.

Sounds like you are having fun Hawk-eye, glad you are getting to talk gear and gorge while away.

it's probably a hammock much like claytor's no net hammock design.. I've used those from the thai, indonesian and borneo army sometime back during an exercise and they are all pretty basic models.. channel sewn and double layer of uncoated nylon.. The double layer though, is not for pads in tropical asia but is where you sleep.. pretty much like a cocoon..

One thing I've notice in all my use, the thai hammocks are the best! they can take the abuse of jungle use whereas the others all start to fall apart after 2 trips.

    Another day with the Captain

    ... and not Captain Morgan!

Apparently while I was at the factory the hammock was delivered to the office. Below are some not so great photos of the hammock taken with my iPhone so ... pardon the less than stellar focus on it.

I only had the apartment window and door frame to sort of string it up. I'll do it justice when I get back home and can set it up between some real trees.

What I can tell you it reminds me a lot of the old Vietnam Era hammocks ... bug netting and over cover. It's made of a ripstop nylon but the bed is a canvas of some kind. The whole thing is a bit small packed but still has some size. I'm guessing three pounds but I'll check when I get it home.

It's got a side enterance zipper and as storage area below with a smaller length zipper.

Kinda neat little rig ... would be fun as a car camping hammock ... but hey ... it is what it is. Very nice gentleman to supply this to me.

More to come when I get it state side and have better room to photo it with a real camera.

Dave ... did you just call me a bad word? Ha ... yeah it was a nice gift .. and I mean from a perfect stranger met in a restaurant. Now got to figure how to squeeze it into my luggage!
Now that would be pretty cool if he'd come on HF. I wrote it on the back of my business card .. SO CAPTAIN ... if you see this ... tell us more about this gift. AND A million thanks for such a thoughtful gift to a complete stranger. I'm truly sorry I don't remember your last name. I do remember your first name Donald ... hope to see you on here.

No ... sorry I've not spec'd it out. There's no instructions with it like are usually sewn in some of our military items. No labels at all that I spotted. It's built like a tank. I'll see about getting more details on it later. Can't wait to try it out between a couple trees back home though.

Now ... got to go find me some dinner! There's a local Indonesian chain restaurant up the street that's called "Texas Chicken" ... got to go check that out just for the name!

Keep it in your carry-on, it would be a great way to relax on your lay-overs. String it up between those chairs at the airport.
