Material Selection

Greetings all, new to the forum. I am a long time UL backpacker and DIY'er. I am starting down the hammock hanging road and had a few questions. Did quite a bit of searching first.

I plan on picking up my hammock material at OWF as I am lucky enough to have them close, but I am unsure as to what material. My plans are for a single layer hammock, gathered end, and hopefully adding a shelf similar to the WB Hammocks. I am six feet, 200 pounds. Can I get away with 1.1 oz sil? Recommendations for amount of fabric?

I plan on ordering my suspension from Whoopie Slings. I would like to get my total system as light as possible, so any recommendations would be great.

I'd like to suggest not using sil for your hammock body - it's waterproof (so any back sweat stays right there in the hammock with you...) and extremely slippery. 1.1oz uncoated or DWR is great. 200lb is pushing the limit for a single layer of 1.1oz ripstop though, you may find it has too much stretch. That said, many folks here use 1.1 single layer hammocks in the 200lb range, so they'll give better feedback on that issue than I can.

Welcome Highlander366, where about in ID are you? I am in MT Home and there are getting to be a few other folks in the Boise area that are now posting on here.

Like Scott said avoid sil but OWF has a good range of colors of 1.1 and 1.9 fabrics in stock. As to how much for your height I would start with 11-12 feet. That makes a long hammock but it will lay very comfortably. I have some DIY's and store bot stuff if you want to get together some time and try out a few.

Paul I am in Nampa, I noticed a post about your group hang that is coming up. Where are you guys going specifically in the Sawtooths?

im about the same height, and a little heavier, and i do fine with 1.9 oz jo-ann ripstop @ about 10 feet finished length... personal prefference i guess.

We are going to start at Pettit and head up to Alice and Twin Lakes then over Snowyside pass to Toxaway then back down to Pettit. Then we are going to head up near cape horn and hike into Bear Valley hot springs for a night.
