Looking for a good place to Backpack

I live in central Ms. which is backpacking challanged. My son and I want to go backpacking this weekend but don't want to drive all night to get there. We have hiked the Buffalo River Trail in Ark. and the Pinhoti in Ala. I would appreciate any suggestions on any place closer to home.

I feel your pain!! Living in Ms does present Hiking challenges. I also travel to Hike the Pinhoti. The Eagle Rock Loop close to Glenwood Arkansas is 5 hrs from yazoo city. This loop 26 miles in length, with a few tough sections, would be great for a weekend trip. The other area that might give you a few options would be the Sipsey wilderness area, close to Double Springs Alabama, this place is most likely closer than any other places. I highly recommend Eagle Rock Loop. You can even take showers when you get through at Albert Pike Campground! Hope this helps!!

I've heard that Sipsey is rather inhospitable this time of year. I suppose you take what you can get. I'm fortunate to have some altitude and cold water to fall back on this time of year.

Definitely. The Sipsey has excellent backpacking, but the heat and humidity there in July/August are nearly unbearable.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have thought about the sipsey glad to know about the weather. Eagle rock looks pretty good. Are any of them Loops.

If you do the Eagle Rock Loop the campground at Albert Pike was still closed when I was out that way a few weeks ago. They are still recovering from all of the flood damage.
